Dear American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG),
Today, in the United States, 1 in 10 girls and women see an average of 8 doctors over 10 years before they’re diagnosed with endometriosis.
Today, in the United States and around the world,
countless girls are missing school…
women are leaving careers they love….
abandoning dreams of having children…
watching their personal relationships suffer...
Doctors regularly tell them that pregnancy & hysterectomy are cures and that pain is normal or in their heads. When they finally get a diagnosis, they’re prescribed an array of drugs & undergo multiple, ineffective surgeries.
This is a public health crisis.
Unfortunately, you are partially to blame for it.
Approximately 60,000 OBGYNS depend on your Practice Guidelines for endometriosis to learn the latest information on how to treat the disease. Yet, these guidelines are filled with inaccuracies and misleading information, suggesting hormonal medications that only manage symptoms and equating them with surgery. Hysterectomy is inaccurately listed as a definitive treatment for the disease.
Beyond that, you have failed to effectively advocate for a separate CPT coding for excision surgery, considered by experts as the gold standard treatment. This relegates these millions of girls and women to subpar treatment.
It’s time to break that cycle. It’s time for a new normal that doesn’t mean multiple doctors, drugs, surgeries, misdiagnoses and years of pain.
The time of misleading and inaccurate information and inaction is over. The time for change is now.
